Sclerotherapy, also known as foam sclerotherapy, is a procedure in which a sclerosing agent is injected into spider veins or small varicose veins. This permanently closes the vessels and the unsightly veins gradually disappear.

The treatment is ideal for patients who wish to have cosmetically unsightly spider veins or minor varicose veins removed.

The sclerosing agent is injected into the affected vein, often as a fine-bubbled foam, so that it is distributed optimally. After the treatment, you will be given a compression bandage and should go for a walk for about 30 minutes.

The treatment is virtually painless. Some people feel a slight burning or pulling sensation at the injection site, which quickly subsides.

A session usually lasts 20–30 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis in the practice, without anaesthesia or downtime.

The cost of sclerotherapy starts at around €320 per treatment, depending on the extent and number of spider veins. As this is a cosmetic treatment, health insurance companies do not usually cover the costs.

Depending on the severity, 1–3 sessions are often sufficient, but more appointments may be necessary for larger vein networks.

Initial improvements are often visible after just a few weeks, with the final result becoming apparent after a few months.

Occasionally, small bruises, redness or discolouration may occur. These side effects are usually harmless and disappear on their own.

The treated spider veins disappear permanently. However, new spider veins may form over time, which can also be treated if necessary.

Sclerotherapy should not be performed during pregnancy, breastfeeding, acute infections, known allergy to the sclerosing agent, severe arterial circulatory disorders, acute thrombosis or severe heart and lung disease. Your doctor will carefully check whether you have any contraindications before treatment.
