Eternal youth
In Silicon Valley, super-rich tech entrepreneurs such as Jeff Bezos (Amazon) and Larry Page (Google) are investing huge sums of money to get closer to mankind's dream of eternal youth. It goes without saying that they are not only driven by scientific curiosity - they naturally also want to extend their own lifespan and maintain their health.
Scientific key
One key to understanding ageing is autophagy, a cellular cleansing process for which the Japanese scientist Yoshinori Ohsumi was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2016. Closely linked to autophagy is spermidine, a natural substance in every cell in the body. As we age, the concentration of spermidine in the body decreases.
Applications and study findings.
In order to counteract the ageing process, it makes sense to supply the body with spermidine via suitable foods, dietary supplements or - even more effectively - via infusions.
This rejuvenating effect of spermidine was initially confirmed in scientific studies on animals. An international team of researchers from Austria, France, England and Switzerland, led by the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Innsbruck, recently confirmed the anti-ageing effect of spermidine in humans.
A study at the Institute of Neurophysiology at Hannover Medical School (MHH) has also demonstrated the protective effects of spermidine on age-related diseases.
Spermidine and lifestyle
In the meantime, a real hype has developed and many longevity supporters, celebrities and super-rich tech entrepreneurs swear by the miracle cure spermidine.
The fact that the name goes back to the first discovery of the substance in male seminal fluid certainly doesn't detract from spermidine's popularity.
